Burning calories in Pathanamthitta, India

As part of the KNOw Diabetes campaign, more than 2,000 students will join the Global Diabetes Walk in Pathanamthitta, in the Indian state of Kerala on 14 November. Teachers, parents and health and education authorities will also join in.

Dr.G. Vijayakumar, Chairman and Managing Director of Medical Trust Hospital Kulanada is an experienced Walk coordinator. “We have been organising Global Diabetes Walks since 2004. This year’s Walk will be followed by a weeklong diabetes awareness exhibition in Thiruvananthapuram, the capital city of Kerala. This will be the first of a series of exhibitions in the various district headquarters in Kerala within the next 2 years,” he says.

Under the campaign motto “To the community through students”, Dr. Vijayakumar’s team has been conducting diabetes awareness classes and medical camps in more than 250 schools since November 2008. This way, they intend to motivate the school authorities to conduct Global Diabetes Walks in the schools on 14 November. And Dr. Vijayakumar has more than one good reason for joining: “Walkers will feel the beauty of walking together, and they will learn how to burn a few calories.”

This year’s walk is organised in collaboration with the Pathanamthitta District Panchayath Council, Pathanamthitta Municipality and various Government Health and Education Departments.
