Walk with ocean view in Mexico

Mazatlán, Sinaloa. “Diabetes is everyone’s concern. Even if we do not suffer directly from diabetes, we still have a responsibility to avoid it and contribute to minimising the number of people with diabetes in the world. We need to educate ourselves on how to control it in order to help those with diabetes. A world with less illness is not one with more medication, but one where people are more aware of their own health and well-being.”

Such are the words of Marisol Garcia Mercado, nutritionist at the Mazatlán College of Nutrition and coordinator of the first Global Diabetes Walk in Mazatlan, Mexico. The idea of the Walk grew out of a wish to create awareness and it will create the pretext for a continuous campaign named “Prevention – doing exercise”.

The Walk will take place in Mazatlán’s main avenue at 7 in the morning on Saturday 14 November. Every participant will have an official t-shirt and a local radio station will broadcast as the Walk progresses. Before and after the Walk, a medical team will measure levels of blood sugar and blood pressure. Nutritionists will also measure hip-waist circumferences and there will be stands with equipment for diabetes treatment as well as snacks and water. All participants will be given an information pamphlet about how to prevent and control diabetes.

The first Mazatlán Walk is organised by the College of Nutritionists and the Health & Fitness Gym in collaboration with the radio station 100.3 PLANETA FM. Other supporters are the Mazatlan Diabetes Association and the Associations of Surgeons and General Practitioners in Mazatlan who will conduct a diabetes congress the week after the Walk. The Walk is open to the general public as well as diabetes patients and their family.

“I think all of us know someone with diabetes. While we all want to learn about the disease and about how to avoid it, we are not using the tools,” says Walk coordinator Marisol Garcia. “I see it in my patients who fear diabetes but still keep eating junk food. They do not give up their bad habits and they do not look after their weight. They are afraid but they do nothing to avoid it. With the Walk I want to encourage people to get up and start doing something.”
