Run or Walk in Cape Town 2009
With an expected 3,000 participants, the Western Cape branch of Diabetes South Africa is well on their way to organising their 2009 Global Diabetes Walk on Saturday 14 November.
“We want to increase the number of participants from last year to many more this year," says Margot Mc Cumisky, Branch Manager. "We have requested our local media to assist in promoting the event, and we are using the hype around the upcoming World Cup 2010 in South Africa to promote healthy lifestyles. At the 2009 Walk we will be selling soccer balls with the slogan Kick Start a Healthy Lifestyle."
Since 2001, the Western Cape branch of Diabetes South Africa has organised an annual walk to mark the end of the National Diabetes Week in November. The idea is to promote healthy lifestyles amongst all South Africans and demonstrate the positive effects of exercise on blood glucose levels and one's general well-being.
In 2008, the walk was part of the Global Diabetes Walk for the first time with 1,000 participants. It was organised in partnership with the Western Cape Department of Health and Lions International and many of the participants came from the diabetes support groups and the general public from around the Cape. People walked or ran in one of the most beautiful walk locations in the Western Cape.
