With a purpose of creating awareness in the people at large, regarding diabetes, its prevention and management and to stress the importance and need of regular physical activity and exercise, the National  Diabetes and Diabetic Foot Programme-Pakistan, organized a “Diabetes Awareness Walk” in Karachi, Pakistan on 16th of December 2007, in connection with World Diabetes Day.

The walk was inaugurated by Prof F.U Baqai, The Chancellor of Baqai Medical University, Karachi, Lt Gen(Rtd) Prof. Syed Azhar Ahmed, The Vice chancellor of Baqai Medical University, Karachi, and Prof.  Abdul Samad Shera, Honorary President International Diabetes Federation and Secretary General Pakistan Diabetes Association. Prof. Masood Hameed, vice chancellor, Dow University of Health sciences and Prof. Zaman Shiekh, Director, National Institutional of Diabetes and Endocrinology also honored the occasion with their presence.

The walk was heavily participated by people of all ages and belonging to all walks of life including doctors, medical professionals, journalists, lawyers, social workers, students, children, women and common people. More than 1200 people participated in the walk

A Diabetes Screening Camp was also conducted on this occasion in which more than 400 people participated. Free, blood-sugar and cholesterol tests and measurement of Body Mass Index were done. Many new and undiagnosed cases of diabetes were discovered during the screening.
